Kenbu is a Japanese dancing art which uses the sword and other weapons as a central part of the dance. Ken means sword and Bu means dance. The dances are performed to Chinese style Japanese poems that are either sung live or played from recordings.

Because the songs in Kenbu originate from poems, many of the dances actually tell small stories. These stories will relay an event in history or perhaps a tale from Japanese folklore. It is important for practitioners of Kenbu to understand both the meaning of the dance movements and the context in which they are being used. This can be very difficult if you don’t speak Japanese!
